Isn’t it great to see normal again?
Sometimes a compromise turns out a lot better than you expect
It has been eight months since my last update and the reality there has been little to report about or frankly to complain about. As a result of the efforts made last Fall by the LCA, City of Houston (CoH), and the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) to reach a compromise regarding the Seasonal Lake Lowering Program (SLLP) lake levels were not intentionally lowered below full pool (201’ msl) this Spring
For the first time since 2019 we saw no arbitrary lowering to meet a date or target and the lake level was managed as it has been for many years. Credit should be given to the CoH Public Works who had the authority to call for up to 6” of lowering releases but did not as there was no significant storm threat in April and May and much of the state was in drought. Given the compromise reached on SLLP resulted in a target of only six inches of lowering it appears that mild weather and good judgement prevailed.
With the normal evaporation rate that is likely to happen between now and Labor Day there is a good chance, unless there is a named storm threat, that minimal or no seasonal lowering will be requested in August or September. So far this year our lake has not startedany monthartificiallylow and hopefully we will not see any additional SLLP lowering for 2022.The compromise process agreed an annual review would take place each Fall and we expect to restart those meetings in August to agree on an SLLP plan for 2023. This years’ experience gives both sides a higher level of trust and good basis to work from
